  2. What were some things Gertrude did that support Hamlet saying "Frailty thy name is woman"?

  3. Janpaul,
One important thing that Gertrude did that supported Hamlet's quote was her initial bond between old Hamlet; Her inability to stay loyal to him via remarrying his brother, Claudius, and the fact that she did all this shortly after old Hamlet's death reveals that she is "frail". How might Hamlet's references to important characters in the past (Caesar, Alexander) add to his reasoning?

    1. Hamlet made allusions to those two to say that although they were great people, they all turn to dust anyway. What reasoning are you talking about?

    2. Okay I think I know what you're asking now. The allusions would make Hamlet reach a new conclusion that would make him no longer concerned about Claudius going to heaven or hell (like in the confession box), since Claudius would really end up as dust. With that doubt erased, Hamlet can act. I think.. it's a stretch.

    3. Hamlet also realizes that since everybody turns into dust in the end, he does not have to be afraid killing someone or being killed by someone. Hamlet was undecisive because he believed that killing is a sin. But he realizes that eventually everything will be meaningless when they die, like Caesar and Alexander.

  4. With the addition of a ghostly apparition in the play (Hamlet's dad), how effective did it influence Hamlet and his decision making later on?

    1. The appearance of the Ghost, the spirit of King Hamlet, contributed to the "trauma" felt by Prince Hamlet because it pushed his faith (religion) to the limit. Since the Ghost was condemned to stay on Earth until its soul wad freed or cleansed, Prince Hamlet's faith in God is tested (seeing the spirit miserable). Prince Hamlet's uncertainty towards God resonates from this appearance of the Ghost. This is seen throughout the whole play. (For instance, in his "To be or not to be" speech, when he comtemplates suicide, this same uncertainty is seen.)

To answer your question, the appearance of the Ghost was very effective in influencing Hamlet's decision-making because it gave rise to Hamlet's increased uncertainty and inabilty to act. He even contemplates whether the Ghost was a spirit sent by the devil or was it really a restless spirit trying to be freed of its troubles.

  5. Gertrude is weak-minded because she marries Claudius just shortly after Hamlet's(Senior)death, with little time to grieve his passing. "Frailty thy name is woman" in Hamlet's soliloquy shortly happens after their marriage. Gertrude was also unaware that Claudius murdered Hamlet(Senior)throughout the play.

  6. Gertrude also died in vain at the end of the play. She drank the poison which supposed to be drank by Hamlet. Gertrude was not a target of anyone to be killed, but eventually she died by being careless. This also shows that women are weak.

    1. How do you think Hamlet's opinion of Gertrude affected the way he treated Ophelia later on in the play?

    2. Hamlet's opinion that all women are weak is shown by his line "Frailty thy name is woman." And this includes Gertrude and Ophelia. Hamlet later on treated Ophelia with cruelty and this is affected by Hamlet's opinion that womean are weak.

  7. The ghost's appearance increased Hamlet's hatred with Claudius even more, despite Hamlet's skepticism for the ghost since he thinks it's an evil spirit. However, the ghost was influential in Hamlet's committed goal to avenge his father's death.

  8. Despite the fact that Claudius initially committed the murder that sparked the deaths of many others, Hamlet is considered "evil" in certain aspects. If Hamlet is truly the villain, instead of the tragic hero, then what evidence supports this?

    1. There are some scenes that show aspects of Hamlet being the villain. During Claudius's confession, Hamlet does not kill him because he does not want Claudius to go to heaven. Hamlet wants him to kill him at a time that will make him go to hell. Also Hamlet does not feel sorry about killing Polonious even though it was an accident. And Hamelt changes the letter that was sent by Claudius to the England king so that Guildenstern and Rosencratz are killed.
Although all three situations were initially caused by Claudius killing old Hamlet, Hamlet also can be seen as a villain since he brought death to a lot of people too.

    2. Hamlet can be seen as a villain because he is erratic and focuses on mostly on death. The other characters try and figure out what is wrong with him as he seems threatening (i.e. his madness). Hamlet also ends up killing more than Claudius. In the end, Hamlet is still considered a tragic hero, since his weaknesses in indecisiveness interfered in revenge.
